K-pop Superstar SUGA Charged for Riding Electric Scooter Under the Influence

K-pop superstar SUGA, a prominent member of BTS, has recently faced legal trouble for operating an electric scooter while under the influence. This incident occurred in Seoul’s trendy Yongsan district and has drawn significant attention.
On the evening of the incident, 31-year-old SUGA, who is currently fulfilling mandatory military service as a social service agent, was cited by local authorities. The Yonhap news agency reported that SUGA fell from his scooter and was subsequently tested for alcohol. The results showed a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent, which is above the legal limit for operating a vehicle.
In a heartfelt apology posted on the social media platform Weverse, SUGA admitted to his mistake. He confessed, “I mistakenly thought the distance was short and forgot that riding an electric scooter under the influence is prohibited. I broke the road traffic law.”
The BTS member explained that he fell while attempting to park his scooter and was detected by a nearby police officer. Following the breathalyzer test, SUGA’s license was revoked, and he was fined. Despite no harm to others or damage to property, SUGA took full responsibility for his actions.
In the same Weverse post, SUGA expressed his regret, stating, “I apologize to those affected by my careless behavior and assure you that I will not repeat this mistake.” He vowed to learn from the incident and improve his conduct in the future.
The incident has not only caused concern among fans but also led to an apology from HYBE, the agency representing BTS. HYBE clarified that SUGA was wearing a helmet and that the ride was a short distance of approximately 500 meters (1640 feet). They further confirmed that SUGA is prepared to face any additional disciplinary measures as deemed necessary.
As BTS continues their “hiatus” due to mandatory military service requirements in South Korea, fans eagerly await the return of the full band. The next member to complete their service will be J-hope in October, with SUGA and the remaining members scheduled to finish in June 2025.
