#EndSARS Protesters Released After Four Years in Jail: Key Updates
In a recent development, six men involved in the 2020 #EndSARS protests have been released after nearly four years in prison. These individuals were accused of disrupting public peace during the demonstrations.
The six defendants—Daniel Joyinbo (31), Adigun Sodiq (28), Kehinde Shola (32), Salaudeen Kamilu (29), Sodiq Usseni (33), and Azeez Isiaka (34)—had reached a plea bargain agreement and admitted guilt to the charges.
The Lagos State Government had accused them of breaching public peace, a serious offense under Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
During the court session at the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ikeja, Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi reviewed the plea deal. Although she found the defendants guilty, she chose not to impose a sentence.
Instead, Magistrate Osunsanmi cautioned and discharged the men, acknowledging their nearly four-year confinement as a significant factor in her decision.
Dr. Babajide Martins, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), had earlier presented an updated charge. He outlined that the defendants’ actions on November 23, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. in Ebutte Metta, Lagos, could have incited a breach of public peace.
The DPP had urged the court to consider a sentence based on the guilty plea.
In contrast, the defendants’ attorney, T.D. Ojeshino, appealed for leniency, stressing that the defendants were first-time offenders and some were key family providers.
He argued that their extended custody period had been a substantial punishment.
In summary, the six men, initially charged with disrupting public peace during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, have regained their freedom after a lengthy legal battle and significant time served.

Her distinguished legal career began in Lagos as a private lawyer before her appointment as a Senior Magistrate in 1989.
She was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2004 and to the Supreme Court in 2013, becoming the fifth female Justice in its history.
