Lagos Accident: Three Dead at Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge
Three individuals lost their lives in a tragic Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge accident that occurred early Monday morning in Lagos. The accident took place around 1 am at the Lekki-Ikoyi Toll Gate, involving two vehicles whose drivers, miraculously, survived the crash.
A witness, using the handle @Drweloveu on X, shared that the drivers emerged unscathed. According to the user, “No scratch on their bodies. They came out hale and hearty, while their friends lay dead.” The post continued to describe how, instead of assisting, the police handcuffed the drivers upon arrival, causing shock among the onlookers.
Eyewitnesses, including elders in the area, were reportedly appalled by the police’s focus on arresting the survivors rather than helping the victims. After numerous pleas from the gathered crowd, the police eventually released the drivers, and the community began searching for the families of the deceased.
The police arrived at the scene and took occupants of the vehicles to the hospital. Unfortunately, three were certified dead and the police took their bodies to Yaba mortuary.

Lagos Accident: Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He stated, “The police arrived at the scene and transported the victims to the hospital. Unfortunately, three were pronounced dead, and their bodies were taken to the Yaba mortuary. The police also took the driver responsible for medical care and handed him over to his family. An investigation is currently underway.”
This Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge accident has left the community in mourning and raised questions about police response during emergencies. Further details are expected as the investigation unfolds.

Fuel Price Hike: Deregulation Impacts Fully Unfolding, Says IPMAN
Fuel Price Hike: The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has linked the recent fuel price surge to the effects of full deregulation in the petroleum sector.
Speaking on Thursday during a Channels Television interview, IPMAN President Abubakar Garima explained that the removal of subsidy has allowed deregulation to take full effect. “We can no longer call it an increase; it’s simply deregulation now in full swing,” he said.
In Lagos, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) retail outlets raised the price of premium motor spirit (fuel) from ₦855 to ₦998 per litre. In Abuja, the price rose from ₦897 to ₦1,030 per litre. This adjustment follows President Bola Tinubu’s May 2023 declaration that the fuel subsidy was “gone” during his inauguration.
Fuel Price Hike: A Rising Trend
Before the removal of the subsidy, fuel prices were around ₦200 per litre across Nigeria. Since then, prices have been steadily rising, which, along with the floating naira, has contributed to the increased cost of living. This economic shift has made basic commodities unaffordable for millions in Nigeria.
Fuel Availability to Improve
Despite rising costs, availability remains a significant issue. Queues at filling stations across the country have become a regular sight. However, Garima reassured Nigerians that with deregulation fully in place, fuel supply would improve. “Now that there’s no subsidy, availability will no longer be an issue,” Garima stated.
He added that other marketers, not just NNPC, would now be able to import products directly, including from Dangote Refinery.
NLC’s Call for Reversal
Amid the price hike, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has voiced its opposition, demanding a reversal. The NLC argues that the increased prices will exacerbate poverty, as production capabilities are hampered. “Previous increases did not yield positive results; they only made Nigerians poorer,” the NLC noted in a statement, urging the government to reverse the recent hike.
President Tinubu has urged citizens to remain patient as his reforms are expected to produce long-term benefits, despite the current hardships.

Return Petrol Prices to June 2023 Levels, TUC Urges Federal Government
Return Petrol Prices: The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on the Federal Government to lower the price of petrol, demanding that it be returned to the levels seen in June 2023.
The TUC emphasized that this adjustment would not only restore previous prices but should also result in a reduction below that level to ease the financial burden on Nigerians.
During a press conference in Abuja, TUC President Festus Osifo requested that the government provide foreign exchange at a rate of $1 to ₦1,000 specifically for the Dangote Refinery, compared to the current $1 to ₦1,600 rate. This move, according to Osifo, would significantly reduce the cost of petrol.
Government Intervention is Crucial
“The solution we’re proposing,” Osifo said, “will return petrol prices to the levels we saw in June 2023.” He further noted that no government should abandon its critical sectors to market forces, calling for more active government participation in regulating the oil industry.
Since May 2023, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has steadily increased petrol prices, with the cost rising from ₦184 per litre to ₦998 by October 2024 in Lagos. As of June 2023, petrol was priced around ₦450 per litre.
Return Petrol Prices: Affordability and Availability
The TUC also emphasized the importance of making petrol both affordable and accessible to all Nigerians. Osifo proposed that all marketers should be given licenses to lift fuel from the Dangote Refinery. He added that if Dangote Refinery can’t meet daily demand, the NNPCL should source refined petrol from other suppliers to ensure availability.
“We must look for every means possible to meet demand while Dangote ramps up production. This is key to resolving the supply issue,” Osifo stated.
Nigerians Face Higher Petrol Prices Again
On Wednesday, petrol prices surged once more, with NNPCL outlets in Lagos and Abuja adjusting prices to ₦998 and ₦1,030 per litre, respectively. This price hike, along with long queues at filling stations, has caused panic among motorists and transporters, especially since other non-NNPCL stations followed suit, selling petrol at over ₦1,050 per litre.
While no official explanation has been given for the price increase, it’s believed to be linked to NNPCL’s first petrol batch from Dangote Refinery, which began distribution in mid-September.
