Boxer Cindy Ngamba Makes History with Refugee Olympic Team’s First-Ever Medal
The Refugee Olympic Team made its debut at the Rio 2016 Games, aiming to represent forcibly displaced people worldwide.
Cindy Ngamba secured the first-ever medal for the Refugee Olympic Team after triumphing over France’s Davina Michel in the women’s 75 kg boxing quarterfinals at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Ngamba, originally from Cameroon, has been living in Britain since she was 11.
She outperformed Michel with a unanimous points decision, ensuring at least a bronze medal by advancing to the semi-finals.
Ngamba, who identifies as a lesbian, faced significant challenges in her home country where her sexual orientation is illegal.
Her victory marks a historic moment for the Refugee Olympic Team, which first participated in the Rio 2016 Games and was established to give a platform to athletes who have been displaced globally.
This year, 37 athletes from over a dozen countries are competing in Paris under the team’s banner.
Ngamba’s qualification for the competition was based on merit, making her the first Refugee Athlete to do so.
She demonstrated her prowess by winning her second consecutive bout with ease, advancing to the semi-finals in the French capital. In boxing, losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals.
Despite Britain’s desire to include her in their team, efforts to obtain a British passport for her were unsuccessful. Ngamba has faced numerous challenges, including an arrest and detention at age 20 when she reported her residence to authorities.
Recalling the experience, Ngamba told the BBC, “Imagine thinking you’re just going to sign and then go back to your house to go about your day, and then you’re put in the back of a van with handcuffs on.”
Ngamba endured a difficult childhood, experiencing bullying at school due to her limited English, weight, and body odor.
Her life took a positive turn when two gym teachers introduced her to boxing, a sport that has since become her passion and path to success.
Today, Ngamba stands tall, stating that being in Paris means “the world” to her.
She believes her journey resonates with people globally, especially those facing personal challenges and obstacles.
“I am sure it means the world to people all around the world, not even athletes, that are going through life with so many issues and obstacles, they don’t believe in themselves, and feel like it’s the end of the world,” she expressed.
This monumental achievement not only highlights Ngamba’s resilience but also shines a light on the strength and determination of refugee athletes worldwide.

Former Arsenal legend Perry Groves has passionately urged the club to seize the chance to sign Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen. With the January transfer window closing soon, Groves believes Arsenal’s need for a prolific striker has never been greater.
Arsenal’s Striker Dilemma
Last summer, Arsenal made a surprising decision by not pursuing a proven goalscorer, choosing instead to rely on Kai Havertz. The German international impressed as a false No. 9 towards the end of last season under Mikel Arteta. However, the Gunners now face mounting pressure to sign a top-class forward after Gabriel Jesus sustained a season-ending injury.
Victor Osimhen: A Game-Changer

When asked about Osimhen, Perry Groves told talkSPORT:
“In a heartbeat. You’ve got Gyokeres, obviously, they are talking about Isak. You ain’t going to get Isak because Newcastle are chasing a Champions League spot.
“If it means paying over the odds or securing a loan, Arsenal must act. Any top-level centre-forward could transform this team.”
Arsenal Fans Call for Reinforcements
With Gabriel Jesus’ injury leaving a glaring gap in the squad, Arsenal fans are urging the club to strengthen their attacking options. Osimhen, known for his pace, power, and clinical finishing, could be the perfect fit to bolster Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.
Why Osimhen Stands Out
Osimhen’s performances at Galatasaray and Napoli have showcased his ability to deliver under pressure. His versatility and instinctive goal-scoring make him a valuable asset for any team. If Arsenal can secure his signature, it could significantly enhance their attacking depth and give them an edge in the title race.
